Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the oldest department of Goa Dental College & Hospital.  It was part of the Goa Medical College. Goa Medical College is the first medical college in Asia established in 1842 as Escola Medica by the Portuguese. Goa Dental College was established in 1980. Same year Dept of Dentistry was called D.O.S. (Dept of Oral Surgery) Later in year 1984 was called Dept of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Till date Dept of Oral & maxillofacial surgery has its presence in the Goa Medical College where all the emergency and trauma services are provided to the patients having Maxillofacial problems. In addition Department has 20 beded in-patient ward (138) and carries out all major surgical procedures in Goa Medical College.

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Goa Dental College has a separate minor OMFS clinic, implantology clinic and exodontia. In exodontia the undergraduates are trained in basic extraction procedures. In the Minor OMFS clinic all minor surgical procedures under local anaesthesia are performed. The dept also has a exclusive implantology clinic where placement of dental implants and prepreosthetic surgical procedures are routinely performed.

Highlights

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery deals with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

Procedures undertaken by the department include:

  • surgical treatment of facial injuries – complex craniofacial fractures, fractures of the lower jaw, upper jaw, cheekbone, nose, and orbit (sometimes all of these together) and soft tissue injuries of the mouth, face and neck
  • removal of head and neck benign and malignant tumours
  • reconstructive surgery
  • Dental Implants and bone grafting for prosthetic rehabilitation of Jaws
  • removal of impacted teeth and complex buried dental roots
  • removal of jaw tumours and cysts
  • cosmetic surgery temporomandibular (jaw) joint surgery
  • salivary gland surgery – for benign and malignant lesions
  • surgical treatment of cleft lip and palate and other congenital facial deformities
