Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology

Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology is a discipline of dentistry that amalgamates the macroscopic and microscopic evidence of oral disease for logical management.

Towards this end, the aspiring dentist is first introduced to the normal anatomy, histology and embryology of the oral tissues together with the physiological and biochemical basis of functioning of these tissues. This is followed by the exposition of the essential nature, cause, development, structural and functional changes wrought by disease in its various forms.

Undergraduate students acquire competence in the recognition of the normal and abnormal features of the oral and allied tissues by a comprehensive series of lectures, practicals and interactive seminars, slide reviews and projects.

The department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology provides investigative clinical and histopathological services for referred patients, while maintaining a database of the various oral pathoses reported for research.

The department is reasonably well equipped with a well ventilated, bright central students laboratory, binocular microscopes, an extensive slide collection  90 percent of oral pathoses, museum, and a departmental library with a cross section of the latest editions of reference titles.

The clinical pathology section has two fully loaded dental chairs, automated hematology and biochemical analysers.
The  histopathological laboratory has an automated tissue processor, rotary microtome, cryostat, research microscope with prescribed attachments, imaging and facilities for immunohistochemical investigations.
